Essential functions (job duties):
Assist in creating a variety of informative and inspiring materials that encourage philanthropic support to promote the funding priorities of the School of Medicine (SOM).
Support fundraising activities by strengthening written communications and implementing a comprehensive communication strategy to encourage increased giving to the School of Medicine.
This position reports to the Associate Director, Campaigns - School of Medicine.
Prepare a variety of written materials for School of Medicine fundraising initiatives including case statements, gift proposals, donor recognition and stewardship communications, special letters, briefing materials for university leadership and leadership remarks for development events.
Collaborate with Development and unit-based communication teams to generate effective communications and ensure consistent messaging.
Create informative and engaging web-based and print materials to successfully reach targeted audiences.
Assist with developing and implementing a comprehensive communication plan for the SOM fundraising campaign.
Assist with the establishment of annual performance goals and key performance indicators.
Report and monitor progress toward monthly and annual campaign goals.
Provide SOM development staff with writing support and editorial assistance for SOM development projects.
Respond to routine correspondence and inquiries from donors and prospects, as appropriate.
Initiate follow-up actions on outstanding requests.
Manage internal prospect reviews and facilitate preparation of high-level briefing materials for SOM major gift professionals and university leadership.
Serve as an educational resource for SOM personnel in writing, document design/layout and other communication matters.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education Bachelor's degree Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism or another related field.
Experience Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience) Minimum 2-4 years of professional writing experience.
Philanthropic and proposal writing experience preferred.
Higher education or healthcare experience preferred.
Knowledge and understanding of university policies and procedures preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities WRITING SKILLS:
Ability to conduct research, interview subjects and write materials that are creative and interesting, with strong attention to detail, grammar and style rules.
EDITING AND PROOFREADING SKILLS:
Ability to accurately edit and proofread a variety of materials with time-sensitive deadlines.
COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS:
Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and professionally both orally and in writing.
Strong interpersonal skills are a must.
Ability to work successfully with persons from diverse backgrounds.
PLANNING AND ORGANIZATION:
Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, prioritize and plan work activities while meeting respective deadlines.
Strong organizational and time-management skills required.
Demonstrated ability to manage and execute multiple creative projects in various media, often at the same time.
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment.
ANALYTICAL AND PRESENTATION SKILLS:
Ability to evaluate, interpret, and present complex information effectively in professionally prepared documents or presentations.
Must possess a demonstrated attention to detail in order to achieve a high degree of accuracy.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Experience with Content Management Systems, HTML and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
LEARNING AGILITY:
Independent and innovative self-starter who displays an ability to learn quickly and easily adapts to changing situations.
Skills researching topics to gain knowledge and understanding when information gaps exist.
TEAMWORK:
Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues within the division and other units to gain full understanding of the project and desired outcome; ability to produce high quality and consistent results with assistance of team members; provide support to teammates when tackling complex projects.
