During our most recent negotiations with Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, our union ran a contract campaign for the first time, initiated strikes against all three companies at the same time and brought a whole new level of transparency to bargaining.
The result was record-breaking contracts.
From our Stand Up Strike to the recently announced new organizing drive across 13 non-union automakers, the UAW is at the forefront of rebuilding a fighting labor movement.
Our union is seeking an Assistant Director in Communications to help lead our powerhouse communications team.
This is a management position.
This role involves working closely with the UAW Communications Director to set department priorities, supervise and direct staff, train and mentor staff and worker leaders, and effectively and independently manage and support teams working on campaigns to grow our union and build worker power.
Candidates must be comfortable working in a high intensity, high-velocity environment and be willing to work long and irregular hours.
Key Responsibilities Collaborate on creative multimedia approaches to communications campaign strategies.
Work with the Communications Director to develop and enact departmental and campaign plans with clear benchmarks.
Supervise, train, coach, and direct staff.
Be able to effectively and independently lead teams and oversee staff.
Work with Communications Director to align staff work with departmental and campaign goals.
Guide staff in how to quickly assess and make strategic pivots in complex situations.
Maintain regular and accurate collaboration and communication with the Communications Director.
Make recommendations to the Communications Director regarding staff development, retention, discipline, dismissal and promotion.
Be able to effectively liaison with journalists, editorial boards, television networks, etc.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills 5 years minimum experience with union communications and a minimum of two years in a supervisory capacity.
Proven ability to work in a high intensity and quickly changing environment.
Proven experience in a campaign setting, developing campaign communications plans.
Proven experience working directly with working-class people on developing and executing campaign communications.
High proficiency in developing plans and communicating them to staff.
Aptitude for developing staff and fostering strong teams.
Strong familiarity with unions, labor law, new organizing and contract campaigns, and the media.
Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage time and priorities is a necessity.
Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
Basic understanding or proficiency in writing, graphic design, photo/video editing, web design, and media outreach so as to supervise and direct such work.
Successful candidates will exhibit discerning judgment, exemplary people skills, and adept writing capabilities.
The ideal candidate is both a team player who can collaborate with an enthusiastic staff and a self-driven individual versed at time and task management.
