WHAT IS THE SMALL BUSINESS/SELF-EMPLOYED (SB/SE) DIVISION? The Small Business/Self-Employed (SB/SE) Division provides examinations and taxpayer education services for about 7 million small businesses and upwards of 33 million self-employed and supplemental income taxpayers. SB/SE taxpayers generally have higher incomes than most taxpayers, need to file twice as many tax forms, and generally need to rely more on paid tax preparers and the taxpayer education outreach activities of the IRS. WHAT DOES A TAX EXAMINING TECHNICIAN DO? As a Tax Examining Technician, you will perform work that involves resolving previously unsatisfied cases regarding difficult and/or sensitive taxpayer problems, complaints, or inquiries involving potential tax adjustments on all types of tax As an Tax Examining Technician, you will:
Analyze and resolve tax problems using research methods beyond information submitted by the taxpayer to manually reconstruct and compile tax records in determining tax liability or refund entitlement. Identify, accept, or reject returns and process checks. Identify, relate, and cite tax law and case actions. Will include taxpayer contacts (e.g., representatives, third party providers etc,) to inform and explain tax law and procedures. Adjust current and prior year tax accounts involving complex account interrelationships or codes to override controls, retrieve data, and construct records. Calculate taxes, penalties, and interest. Identify gaps in internal procedures and processing methods May serve as a technical advisor, OJT coach, classroom instructor, or reviewer; and provide technical assistance on systemic problems and inconsistencies in IRMs.WHERE CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OTHER IRS CAREERS? GS-08 LEVEL:
You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Experience identifying, analyzing and resolving problems, utilizing online systems to correct and adjust accounts. Experience researching, interpreting, applying regulations/rules, procedures, and established guidelines. Experience performing multiple tasks including identifying missing information or extracting relevant facts. Experience dealing with customers in writing or by telephone in a variety of situations that require explanation of actions or solicitation of information to identify concerns and offer solutions. Experience working and communicating with a team which may include coaching, instructing, reviewing work, or sharing best practices. Experience prioritizing workload and meeting deadlines. - The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
